2025
Again, in March of 2025, I had a residency at Arte Studio Ginestrelle in Assisi, Italy.
Almost daily I visited frescoes done in the early 1600s at Chiesa Nuova. These paintings were kind of quirky, and appeared to be unfinished, or maybe just clunky. There were three artists who worked on the church, but not sure which one was responsible for painting a series of portraits (saints?). I borrowed details from these.
Returning to Chicago, some of the fragmented details done at the residency were finished using grout. This referenced not only the original church / fresco context, but also the way fragments can be dislocated, reassembled, and reframed. With other details, repetitive patterns on vellum were used for the layered visual relationships.
