In November of 2022, I was an Artist in Residence at Arte Studio Ginestrelle in Assisi, Italy. My proposal was to work on stitched postcards and handheld fragment chunks with the intention of working on larger memento pieces upon my return to Chicago.

Assisi is a UNESCO town with treasures from Roman times as well as frescos of Simone Martini, Giotto, Cimabue and Lorenzetti in the basilica of San Francesco and frescoes by later artists are in other churches. But beyond the frescoes, ruins, and layers of time, there is also something magical about the town itself. It’s a place where there was a sense of belonging. The people are warm, fog often lies over the valley below the town and sometimes drifts into the town itself, the afternoon light is a pinkish orange and the medieval history is ever present.
